restorative dentistry
The term “restorative” dentistry encompasses a wide range of
treatments. A brief description of the various treatments will follow – for
more in depth information please contact us directly.
Fillings – We
use a tooth colored composite resin (plastic) that is precisely
bonded to the tooth to repair cavities. Typically, the decay is completely
removed, the tooth is cleaned and then repaired with the filling material. The
result is a restoration that looks, feels, and functions like a real tooth. We
recommend treatment of cavities when they are small because once a cavity
has reached a certain size, a filling is no longer a good choice to fix
the problem – we
must then discuss crowns or onlays.

Onlays – An
onlay is a restoration that fits partially in the tooth and partially covering
the tooth. An impression (mold) is made of the prepared tooth and then
a laboratory fabricates a restoration custom for your mouth. The onlay
can be made out of gold or porcelain.
Crowns – A crown (cap) is a restoration that replaces
the entire outer layer of the tooth. It, too, is constructed in a dental
laboratory. A
crown can be made out of gold, gold and porcelain, or all porcelain.
